Health care subrogation is a legal right held by health care providers and payers to recover their expenses when their members or employees are injured in certain types of accidents and the expenses related to the accidents should have been reimbursed by another party, generally referred to as a third party.
Healthcare Recoveries Inc. (HRI) provides subrogation services on a nationwide basis to health care payers. HRI services are marketed to indemnity carriers, health maintenance organizations, third-party administrators, self-insured employers and governmental agencies.
Medica contracts with HRI to provide subrogation services.
When members receive a letter requesting information on an injury, they may turn to their provider with questions. Direct the member to HRI at 1-800-395-5568.
HRI will contact participating provides for collection when a provider has been reimbursed both by Medica and a liability insurance carrier.
Accurate and detailed diagnosis coding by the provider is of great importance so inquiries are sent out only when appropriate. The diagnosis coding is used by HRI to identify those procedures most frequently associated with conditions related to accidents that are covered by liability insurers.
